Chicks With Knives!!! Opening Night
Thank you to all who came along and supported Chicks With Knives!!! last Saturday. The night was a roaring success (I think the foodtruck, bar and band had much to do with that), with a fantastic crowd.
There are some truly fabulous pieces (by truly fabulous artists) in the show - which are getting snapped up pretty quickly - I recommend getting along and securing a piece of amazing artwork, quick-sticks!
Here are a couple of my works from the show, for those of you who won't get the chance to make the trek.
Do you think I might have been influenced by my recent jaunts as the Substitute Florist and the Yoga Teacher In Training? What's the saying - you live oxen, you breathe oxen? Or perhaps it's the other way around ...
Anyway! Happy Public Holiday everyone! I hope you're all at the pool drinking Negronis.

turning collages into paintings
As a result of three uninterrupted days in the studio, I have been able to get a significant amount of work done. True, day one involved a lot of frustration, crying, lying in bed reading (in defiance) and then some moping. Day two was much more productive, results are yet to be unveiled. Today I have been playing with collage and painting and mixing it up a bit.
I thought I'd share my latest developments - a watercolour based on a collage I was working on yesterday. A flower has inadvertently turned into a pom pom and my interpretation of colour-matching leaves much to the imagination. However, in a world where I am often in control, and my anal-retention is in full swing, this is a rather delightful turn of events. Perhaps it's ok, if not better that this is not an exact replica of the images I selected, cut and composed.
I have enjoyed the blobby pastel-ness of it all.

an uncomfortable dream
an uncomfortable dream, 2012, collage on paper, 32 x 42 cm
Now on show at anna pappas gallery, Melbourne. Inspired by the beautiful song 'Flowers' by Tinpan Orange (which might sound strange, but really it was!). You might remember me mentioning the song in a previous post, when these guys used some of my work to promote the single. I think they are currently filming the video for it, so keep your eyes peeled for the amazing shock of hair belonging to gorgeous frontwoman Emily Lubitz.
The majority of this collection was inspired by music, which you will probably see seeping through the titles as I post them. It was truly a joy to put together, so I hope you get enjoyment out of looking at them. On show until July 7 - anna pappas gallery!

While you're at work, I'm doing this.
So I swoon about, weeping about how I have never acquired any real skills, how I should have finished high school and studied something soul-destroying like accounting, and then at least I would be able to pay my rent and then buy d'affinois instead of coon cheese.
And then I spend a Monday morning making THIS:
I realised the ridiculousness of this life in an email I just sent: "I was just gathering materials to make some crazy cat toys for next
week's show (I can't believe I can classify this as work - I just pasted
some 'cauliflower eyebrows' onto a cat's face)"
That's right. This is actually my job now. The highlight of my morning was finding a miniature fake lemon at the opp shop (PERFECT for making said cat toys), and getting it for free, because the opp shop lady couldn't fathom why on earth I would want it.
By the way, this is about the size of a large grape. Hilarious.
So I suppose I could always study to be an accountant next year. Right now I'm too busy sticking food items to animal's faces.

Title piece from my current show, after the end. By PURE coincidence, this little girl looks scarily a lot like a combination me and my eldest sister Sarah - perhaps if there had been a fourth sister in the family, she would look like this little girl.
Starting to notice a bit of a pattern of little dark-haired girls in my work. My goodness, a psychologist could have a field day with that.

new work
my child, my child - collage on paper, 2012
Due to it's sheer tininess I've decided not to put this piece in the upcoming show - the image in this bad boy measures approx 3 x 4 cm despite being on a rather hefty piece of paper (around 20 x 20 cm. I just made that up. I'm not sure how big it is, but I reckon that's a good estimate).

after the end
Dear friends,
I cordially invite you to attend my upcoming solo show at anna pappas gallery, which opens 30 May, at 6.30 pm. This show is the amalgamation of many moons of serious cutting and pasting, and I'm super excited to have it brought together for this show. Help me get folks spilling out onto the street and join me for a glass of something awesome, would love to see you there!

A parallel universe where what comes after now is the beginning of the past. An alternate reality in which a ghostly and fractured sequence of time leads to cul de sacs where children play eternally. A ruptured linear flow of objects repeat, mutate and accumulate across vast open plateaus of white void. Where creaking growth, like hands dragged across balloons, sets a melody against the marching beat of distant footsteps. Cogs rain down as flowers fly up to meet them. The gardening, the growing - the pruning and the tuning. All just beginning, even after it is finished.

new work
Hello all!
I thought I'd share some new work with you today. It was originally going to be for an upcoming show, but I have changed my direction for that particular body of work, so I decided to pop it up here instead.
Happy Tuesday!

flowers
Good evening all!
Recently I did a little collaboration with the gorgeous peeps of Tinpan Orange, for their new single 'Flowers.' The artwork is from my Stockroom show (check out that post here), called would i rather be a sunflower. You might have seen the original work previously posted here. The piece was actually done in honour of an older song by the band ('Sunflower'), and now has had new life breathed into it for 'Flowers.'
If you haven't heard their music, I strongly recommend checking them out! The band have just left to tour with The Cat Empire through Canada, but no doubt will be gracing our shores with some live goodness in the next few months.
You can download the song (plus a couple of other great tunes) from triple j unearthed, here. I guarantee it will make you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside.
Happy weekend to you all, stay warm!

eyepatch and magical snatch
For those of you who didn't/won't have the chance to see to Janice Darling in her paper-flesh at Rooftop Art Space, I thought I better include a few 'up close and personal' shots of the works.
the killer stretch
waking up nutritionally
the burn
the positive approach
exercises for special problems
the natural approach to weightloss
Big thanks again to all who came to the launch, and have been visiting during their lunch breaks and other such things. It has been such a great collection to work on, and now I am finding it hard to stop Jane Fonda-ing.

Janice Darling - Opening Night
Hello all! My atrocious hangover indicates what a glorious opening we had at Rooftop Art Space last night. The sun was shining, the weather was clear, and there were beverages and burgers a plenty. Massive thanks to the gorgeous Kirsty and Tom Budge, and Kirsty's brother Adam, who were instrumental in making the install and opening one of the most pleasant affairs possible. If you were unable to make the opening, we have a glorious week of weather ahead, so I strongly recommend getting yourself up there, if not to see the show, to at least enjoy the cheery vibe Rooftop has to offer.

Killer pictures by Kirsty and Tom.
Quote of the evening: "Coz everyone loves a beaming vagina, right?"
