shiny window
Now that the effects of about eleventy plastic cups of wine, have started to wear off, I have dragged my pathetic self out of the greasy-food-pit-of-hell to post some photos of last night. It was a great turn out - thanks to all who came along for a peek!
And thanks to my Kent for these awesome detail shots!

one more sleep!
Hey all, just a friendly and pushy reminder that Platform August Shows opens TOMORROW NIGHT at 6 pm so get yourselves down to the subway to see some treats! My work is installed in the Sample space, which is next to the coffee stand around the corner (exit onto Elizabeth St) - you'll know it when you see it!
Here's some sneaky preview shots for you in the mean time, with more detailed shots to come after the launch!
Hope to see some lovely faces there to enjoy some experimental sound and tasty beverages!

justin was testing his limits
Is anybody else thinking of that sound effect you get from those plastic toy pipes from back in the day, not dissimilar to a melody pop? Kinda like 'boooooooooooowup'?
No? Just me then? Ok.

Why I Eyes Ya
The past few days I've been working in tandem with the lovely Tai Snaith ... (we both seem to be holed up in our studios going crazy ... in a good way I think), so in honour of our parallel cat worlds:
There's plenty more where that came from (from both of us!) - stay tuned!

August shows!
So for all you peeps who are simply DEVASTATED (e.g. me) that you can't be in Sydney to see A Touch of Class next week, NEVER FEAR. There are plenty of awesome shows to see in Melbourne ANYWAY.
First and foremost, I am super excited to have work in the Sample space at Platform, which opens next Friday 5 August at 6pm - so get yourself down there if you can, it has some other fantastic artists showing (especially the gorgeous Merryn Lloyd and Renee Cosgrave who are just brilliant, yes I am totally biased) and should be a fun night!
And I can't go without spruiking a Beautiful Volcanoes, a show launching on Wednesday 5 August at the Monash Faculty Gallery. If you can drag your whingy arses south-side for the night, Michael Vale has put together what promises to be a SPECTACULAR-SPECTACULAR show - I think I might be a little bit more excited about this one than Platform. Featuring my beloved Kent Wilson (well I'm allowed to be excited about him, right?), Amelie Scalercio, The Safari Team and the charismatic Mr Vale himself - should be a good'un!
Hope to see you there, we could share a wine (or six).

in the snow-sweet sky
Woo hoo! Doily number two is done and dusted - and I have to say, I am pleased that this doily has made the final cut (Bahahaha!! Because it IS cut! Another dad joke for your enjoyment.) See below for work in progress shots, where you will see how relevant my bad humour is. He he he!
And a gratuitous paparazzi shot (I have my own photographer you see). Big thanks to Alex and Lou for organising - you should your tittie-tube back tomorrow! The lady at the post office was most amused when she was inspecting the tube, "now where's it going dear? Tough Titties? Hang on what?!" and had herself a good belly laugh.
Now don't forget Sydney-siders - A Touch of Class launch night is 3rd August 2011 at Somedays Gallery, 72B Fitzroy St, Surry Hills, so get amongst it! More info on the facebook page.
Now, back to the drawing board.

I have been saving these boys for the 'perfect' collage work, and finally, after about
three years of hoarding, I think I've found it.
I'm feeling much better about this one - makes me think of the olden days when people actually used doilies, and children played outside instead of playing video games - aah, nostalgia!
Can't wait to see what the other doilies look like!

cats from long ago
I was having a coffee with a fellow artist friend yesterday, who was telling me about some collages she'd made in the past of cats with the eyes cut out and more cats' eyes behind them. Spookily (and just plain spooky) similar (we seem to do this quite often - great minds think alike?) to these works, which I thought had cats' eyes in them too ... but turned out to be a raspberry, a flower, and two birds - ha!

What's it gonna be?
The past few days I've been working on some double-doily action - all I can say is thank goodness they sent me two. But now I'm faced with the dilemma - which one?!
There's some splicey colourful action happening here ... and details of my other one to come! (I can't be giving it all away at once now can I?) While I am loving all this colour work, something just isn't sitting right. Do you ever do creative things and wonder how they happened? I really don't feel that this style belongs to me, even though it is me, coz, like, I did it. Obviously. But it doesn't feel me. Me me me! Ok I'll stop.

Don't get too comfy - this one isn't finished, and the other one is still to come ...
It feels like such a strange dilemma though: on the one hand, this doily feels exciting and a little bit scary because it's out of my comfort zone. But on the other hand, it pisses me off - I feel like it's cheating somehow, because I don't do abstract art. But CLEARLY I do. Because there it is. My brain is VERY twirly right now. PLEASE HELP.

evolution?
This is gonna seem really strange, given the size of this work (about 14 x 14 cm), but I have been working on this piece (in a sense) for over TWO YEARS! I know, that is really silly. But I started these little fairy sheep in my honours year and had no idea where to put them - they kept coming out of the collage-material vault (yep, I have a vault) for a play on my cutting mat, and then going back in again.
Finally this wee plant presented itself while I was in Berlin - I have this feeling that these poor little bird-sheep want to eat the nectar that is at the top of the plant, but their tiny little hoofs won't let them get at it - and now I feel mean for turning them into mutants when they could have stayed birds and flown up to eat the nectar. And now I feel a little bit crazy for discussing the welfare of my paper animals.
